Die Geschichte
Die Stadt Teguise wurde um 1406 gegründet und bildete das erste städtische Zentrum der Insel. Später wurde sie zum Bischofssitz erklärt und war bis bis zum Jahr 1852 die Hauptstadt von Lanzarote. Jahrhundertelang war sie das Ziel von Piratenangriffen, zweifellos Reaktionen auf die brutalen Raubzüge der Feudalherren von Teguise, die zuvor an der afrikanischen Küste Tausende von Berbern in die Sklaverei verschleppt hatten. Im Jahre 1586 plünderten nordafrikanische Piraten die Stadt, ermordeten zahlreiche Bewohner und machten alles nieder, was sich ihnen in den Weg stellte. Zum Schutz gegen diese Überfälle wurde das Castillo de Santa Bárbara gebaut, erwies sich aber als nutzlos. 1618 brannten plündernde Berberhorden die Stadt völlig nieder. So kommt es, dass die historischen Gebäude Teguises erst aus dem späten 17. und 18. Jahrhundert stammen.
Die historische Altstadt
Viele historische Bauten, Klöster und Kirchen, Paläste und Parks, prächtige im spanischen Kolonialstil erbaute Häuser und große und kleine Plätze bilden ein grossartiges Ensemble. Die Altstadt steht seit über 20 Jahren komplett unter Denkmalschutz und ist als „Conjunto Arquitectónico Histórico“ klassifiziert, also als Ort mit einem historischen Ortskern und künstlerisch bedeutenden Bauwerken.

The history
The city of Teguise was founded around 1406 and was the first urban centre of the island. Later, it was declared to be a bishop's see and was the capital of Lanzarote up to the year 1852. For centuries, it was the target of pirate attacks, undoubtedly a reaction to the brutal raids of the feudal lords of Teguise, who had previously deported thousands of Berbers into slavery on the African coast. In 1586, North African pirates plundered the city, murdered many of its inhabitants and destroyed everything in their path. The Castillo de Santa Bárbara was built to protect against these raids, but proved to be useless. In 1618, plundering Berber hordes burned the city to the ground. This is the reason why the historical buildings of Teguise only date back to the late 17th and 18th century.
The historic old town
Many historical buildings, monasteries and churches, palaces and parks, magnificent houses built in the Spanish colonial style and large and small squares form a magnificent ensemble. The old town has been completely under monumental protection for over 20 years and is classified as "Conjunto Arquitectónico Histórico", i.e. as a place with a historic centre and artistically significant buildings.
