When Japanese colonized Taiwan in 1932, this area was defined as Parkland No.7 which was one of big metropolis parks plan in Taipei. Until Japanese colonized period ended in 1945, this area was still only fields without any development.
Since 1949, R.O.C. military started to build their bases and military villages─Chien Hua New Village(建華新村) & Yueh Lu New Village(岳盧新村) in this area. Thousands of people had lived here.
The largest base in Taipei was built here in 1956. The base belonged to military police first, and after that it had transferred to different military departments several times including Entertainment Battalion, Chung Cheng Institute of Technology and Army Headquarters─Guard company. The gate of the base was at west of this area, where now is the No.10 entrance of Da'an Forest Park.
At north side of this area, there was an "International House" building and a stadium which belonged to an international culture exchange organization founded in New York (1924). The buildings were built in 1957 and removed in 1992. International House provides foreign students dormitory which can help students to study in Taiwan. These buildings were precious memories of many residents in Taipei.
Since 1956, Taipei City Government had planned to renovate this area into park. Until 1987, Mayor Wu Boxiong(吳伯雄) finally started the construction program and the team for Da'an Forest Park. 1992 April 1st, Tapei City Government started to remove the buildings in this area. Of course, the operation of demolition encountered some protests of the residents. Another incident is government decided to keep Guan Yin(觀音) statue in this ares but it provoked the Christians nearby. After several conflicts and protests between Buddhists and Christians, final agreement is that the statue can keep in the park but without any worship. You can still see the statue in the park right now.
The park was finally completed construction and opened to public on March 29th in 1994 during Taipei City mayor Huang Da Chou's(黃大洲) tenure. At the beginning, the media teased at this park as a "Muddy Park" because of the scenes. But now the park already turned into a scenery forest park.
Da'an Forest Park is also a popular place for movies, it shows up at least six Taiwanese movies until now. Because this park is so amazing with so many people's memory, that's why this park is irreplaceable.
