Geocache Description:

Here is a small one in an easy to reach spot in San Jose's Alum Rock Park. The cache is a small container not far from an easy trail. A writing stick is in there for your use, so no excuses! You are not far from a spot to enjoy a truly rustic lunch.

Alum Rock Park is a hidden gem in the eastern foothills of the city. It’s the oldest municipal park in California, and some spots certainly show it, but that is the touch of history that much of the developed area of Santa Clara Valley lacks. Its gone through many changes since 1872. For more information about its history, check out http://www.nnvesj.org/Archives/ARPHistory.htm. A good trail map may be found at https://www.sanjoseca.gov/home/showdocument?id=20145

Normal precautions for ticks, poison oak and small snakes apply here. GZ was clear of PO when the cache was hidden but there is some on the shady hillside. Your GPSr or cell phone may have difficulty acquiring a signal once you are inside the park, so download the information beforehand. There are a good number of caches in the park, including a few earthcaches.

Admission to the park is free except on some summer holiday weekends. Some lots inside the park are free, some charge a fee at times; the Eagle Rock and Rustic Lands (parking waypoint) lots were free at the time of this publication. The main entrance is on Penitencia Creek Road but there are trailheads along Lariat Lane, Alum Rock Road and Crothers Road. Note that parking is very limited around these trailheads. There is also a free parking lot just outside the main entrance but it is often full. You may also hike down from the Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve from a spur off the Boccardo loop trail. Park hours are 8 AM until 1/2 hour after sunset. A sign at the main entrance gives the time that gate will be locked.
