Geocache Description:

Botany is undergoing a transformation from industrial hub to residential hot spot.

If you are travelling by public transport, take the bus - either the 309 from Central or 307 from Mascot station or 307 from Westfield Eastgardens.

Botany has a long industrial heritage but many new and recently completed developments are turning it into a popular residential area.

Leather and tanning were major industries for Botany, employing a large number of local residents.

In 1880 there were four tanners in Botany and by 1938 there were 21. J Bayley and Sons became the biggest in the area and employed 600 workers at its peak.

From the location of this cache, you can look across the road to Wilson street and see a sprawling expanse of townhouses and apartments where, until recently, many factories stood.

Many more residential developments are under construction and new roads have been built to accommodate the expanding residential area.

Botany has an emerging village atmosphere with new eateries and cafes and is close to the CBD and beaches.

Botany is one of the last suburbs in Sydney to make the transition to residential from industrial and there are still many factories operating in Botany today.
