The Little Free Library began in 2009 by Todd Bol in Hudson, Wisconsin with a purpose to inspire a love of reading, build community, and spark creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world. Little Free Library offically incorporated as a nonprofit in May 2012 with a goal of incorporating 2,500 little libraries nationwide. That goal was met later that year and by late 2016, there were 50,000 libraries in over 80 countries.
As of August 2019, Little Free Libraries have expanded to more than 90,000 libraries in 91 countries. The nonprofit organization has been honored by the National Book Foundation, the Library of Congress, the Library Journal, and countless others for promoting literacy and love of reading.
