When you go to the north from Ueno Station by night train of the Takasaki Line, you can see many lights in a right and left train window. But you can see lights only in a right window after Kounosu station. And a light disappears from both windows when you pass Kumagaya Station. Kounosu is just a place such as the border of the civilization. Sometimes the person living in the southern prefecture from Kounosu calls proudly himself a Saitama person. Because their proud what there are a lot of lively town like the Omiya new downtown area there and they can go to Tokyo for business may let them to say so. However actually a lot of foreign person from the outside of the prefecture or mixed blood people live in the southern prefecture. On the other hand, the person living in the northern prefecture from Kounosu never calls himself a Saitama person. Because in the northern prefecture there are many people living here from generation to generation ancestors from the times of the old burial mound. And there are few rice fields maintained orderly but a lot of wheat field, leek field and konjac field here. It is true Saitama where there is not a natural disaster and is full of green. Furthermore, Chichibu a basin town among mountains appear suddenly when you go to the west along Arakawa by Chichibu Railway from Kumagaya. Though Chichibu was in a remote mountain, this town prospered for a long time as a strategic point of the traffic and got wealth by the silk industry. So the original culture prospered in Chichibu. True Saitama person is thinking Chichibu to be the hometown in their heart. There is a lot of caches in Chichibu, so let’s go there.
上野から夜、高崎線を北上すると鴻巣辺りまでは左右の車窓に灯りが見えますが、鴻巣から先は灯りは右の車窓にしか見えません。そして熊谷を過ぎると灯りは車窓から消えてしまいます。
丁度鴻巣は、埼玉県の文明の境界のようなところです。
鴻巣から南に住む県南の人は、しばしば自分は埼玉県人であると自慢気に言います。それは大宮には新都心を代表とする賑わいがあり、都内にも通えるという自負心が深層心理にあるからではないでしょうか。
しかし、県南には、実際には県外からの外来人あるいは混血人が多いのです。
一方、鴻巣から北に住む人は、自分は埼玉県人などとは言いません。それは多くの県北の人が先祖代々古墳の時代からここに住んでいる当たり前の埼玉県人が多いからです。
ここでは「だんべ」（～でしょう）とか「いぐべ」（行こうよ）とかの方言が未だ日常的に使われています。
そして、ここにあるのは、整然と整備された田んぼではなく、麦畑やネギ畑、こんにゃく畑の広がる畑の世界なのです。
これが天変地異がなく緑豊かな本当の埼玉なのです。
更に、熊谷から秩父鉄道で荒川沿いに西に向かうと、突然山々に囲まれた盆地の街、秩父が現れます。
秩父は辺境の山中にありながら交通の要衝として古くから栄え、絹産業で富を得、独自の文化が栄えたところです。秩父は本当の埼玉県人が心の故郷と憧れているところなのです。
今、鴻巣駅に佇んでいる貴方。
ここから北に向かって、埼玉県人の心の故郷である秩父にいぐべ。秩父ではおそらく埼玉県人の心を感じることができるだんべ。
