This cache was hidden to commemorate Ontario’s first geocache and the 7,000th day of geocaching in Ontario.
The original “GPS Stash” was hidden on May 3, 2000 in northern Oregon by a guy named Dave Ulmer. Ontario joined the geocaching world nine months later, when a man named Walter Henrique (walterh) hid a cache amongst some trees above the Humber River, in Bolton, on February 6, 2001.
tazz was the 14th geocache hidden in Canada in the seventh different province. It was archived 1.5 months later and, according to the owner, was found twice, although no “found” logs are recorded on the cache page. At the request of the local geocaching community, the owner placed a new cache close to the site in 2004.
With the original cache’s early demise, the title of “oldest geocache in Ontario” passed to Deer Bait, which has held the title ever since.
On April 6, 2020, 6,999 days will have elapsed since tazz was hidden, making 7,000 days of geocaching in Ontario.
The cache is hidden amidst a rocky outcrop where the forest transitions. There is no clear trail to follow off the main trail, but the forest is easy to walk through. Winter friendliness will depend on wind and snow behaviour. There is an un-activated TB for the first finder.
