Geocache Description:

Records indicate that Abingdon Parish was established circa 1650. Its name is derived from the home of the colonists who emigrated from Abingdon, England. The first church was a wooden building probably located near the York or Severn River. In 1655, the parish completed construction of its first brick church on land donated by Col. Augustine Warner, the maternal grandfather of George Washington. The foundations of this church can still be found inside the south wall of the church grounds.

The present church (completed in 1755) is in the form of a square or Maltese cross, the main entrance being at its western end. The length of the building from west to east is 81 feet, with its width from north to south being 76 feet 6 inches. The walls (2 feet thick) were built of brick made in Gloucester (from an excavation near the church) in Flemish bond with glazed heads. The bricks framing the entrances are of different sizes, color and clay from those in the body of the church, suggesting the possibility of their having been imported.

Currently, Abingdon's property covers 143 acres facing onto U.S. 17 in historic Gloucester County, midway between the courthouse and Gloucester Point, and includes two buildings plus a walled cemetery. Adorning the church grounds are an area for prayerful respite, numerous beautiful flower beds, and many trees planted by members of the congregation. To the north, you will find a labyrinth, and further on a meditation garden. The grounds are especially beautiful in the spring when the daffodils are in bloom.

Cache is a camo'd pill bottle in the nook of a tree.
