The Florida Cracker Trail runs from east of Bradenton and ends in Fort Pierce, totalling approximately 120 miles. In the early 1800's, this trail was used for both cattle and horses. The Florida Crackers, in the early stages of Florida's emergence as a major cattle producer, made this trip, not for pleasure, but for their sheer existence. This trail was used for cattle and horses to be moved from one side of the state to the other. Today this includes SR66, SR64 and US98. An annual Cracker Trail ride is held the first week of February each year. The term "Cracker" is from the sound the whip makes when in use.
