Highlands Hammock State Park (HHSP) is approximately 9,000 acres and has more rare and endemic species of flora and fauna of any other Florida State Park. HHSP opened in 1931, 4 years before the Florida State Park system was created. Concerned with plans to turn the hammock into farmland, this was an early example of public support for environmental preservation. One of the biggest advocates behind this effort was Mrs. Margaret Robeling. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built a camp at Highlands Hammock as a headquarters and developed other park facilities and the beginning of a botanical garden. The park is also home to the CCC Museum. The park is open 365 days a year from 8 am until sundown.
Boardwalks through numerous trails along Loop Road will take you through the hammock as well as swamp natural systems within the park. Many native animals can be seen including river otters, black bear, panthers, bob cats, alligators, deer, numerous birds and a variety of lizards.
