Geocache Description:

A Blast to the Past!

Atten…tion! This is a 3 part scavenger hunt (basically a multi-cache)! Your mission: find and sign the log at the third site. [Please carefully return the small magnetic container that holds your first clue.]

Your briefing:

The Presidio is where San Francisco began. Founded at the Golden Gate in 1776, it served as a military fort under the flags of Spain, Mexico and the United States before it became a new kind of national park in 1994.

After more than a thousand years of inhabitance by Ohlone people, El Presidio Real de San Francisco (The Royal Fortress of Saint Francis) was founded on June 29, 1776. From 1776 to 1821, the Presidio was the Spanish empire's northernmost military outpost and guarded California's largest harbor from occupation by other European powers including Russia and Britain. After its independence in 1827 the new nation of Mexico took over the fort, which in turn passed it to the United States in 1848 when California joined the United States. As part of a 1989 military reduction program under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, Congress voted to end the Presidio's status as an active military installation of the U.S. Army. On October 1, 1994, it was transferred to the National Park Service, ending 219 years of military use and beginning its chapter as a national park for all to enjoy.

Thanks to team dictaham for collaborating on this cache. Mr. D is a retired US Army Master Sergeant while holding the job of First Sergeant. He served on many an Army Post but not this one. Mrs. D on the other hand can remember the old Post Exchange and the ancient Commissary.
