19. sajandi keskpaigani oli praeguse Kitseküla asumi ala Pärnu maantee ümbruses hoonestatud ainult kõrtsidega tolmuse maantee ääres ja üksikute suvemõisatega koos rohelusse uppuvate aedadega. Piirkond sai nime sealsetel heinamaadel karjatanud kitsede järgi.
