This is a quick park and grab. The original cache container was muggleised so I have made it larger and out of sight for a muggle - BYOP. After replacing the log, please take an extra few seconds to securely close and screw down the cap tightly to ensure a watertight seal. Please respect church service times and avoid the area on Sunday mornings, 9 - 1pm. The land for this Community Garden with its 20+ plots is made available by the Old Hickory First Baptist Church, FBC at the Village. They also host a farmer's market on Tuesday afternoons 4pm - 7pm so avoid that time as the area is very busy then.
Garden plots have been an important aspect of many cultures in history. In the past, community garden plots were commonly used to provide food for families year-round. During WWII, the victory garden plot was an important source of food for American families. Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in community gardens to help mitigate the impacts of food deserts, as a teaching tool for children, and as a positive use for the increased number of vacant derelict sites present in urban areas. In fact, after the destruction wrought by the March 3, 2020 tornado in North Nashville, community garden plots were quickly established to encourage community engagement, build back community spirit, and discourage property developers who threaten to change the character of the neighborhood. Individual and family plots in community gardens can provide fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables for better nutrition and reduce food expense.
Social ties are important to the wellbeing of people and their community, since they can bring both positive health benefits and develop community involvement. Families working together on their plots in community gardens facilitate the creation of social connections and build a greater sense of community spirit. These social ties help reduce crime, empower residents, and help families, and particularly children, to feel safer in their own neighborhoods.
