The Wilder Ranch backcountry is one of my favorite places to hike in the bay area. The backcountry has something for everyone -- panoramic ocean views, wildflowers, open sky, and shady redwoods. Most trails are open to mountain bikers. There are plenty of legal and free entrances along Highway 1 and Empire Grade, or you can park in the state park parking lot on the ocean side of the highway. The ocean breeze makes this a great destination even on a hot summer day.
The cache is placed at the junction of the Twin Oaks Trail and the Wilder Ridge Loop. This location is in a small valley, so there's no spectacular view from here. The cache just marks a nice place to rest while you decide which way to go next. You're looking for a hanging pill bottle in an unusual "tree" of oak (regular, not poison), ivy, and coyote brush.
Wilder Ranch hours are sunrise to sunset. Happy hunting!
