Geocache Description:

John Sims Drive

John Sims Drive is located in Northern Wellington.  It is split into two sections, each in a different suburb. The southern section is in Broadmeadows 6035, while the northern section is in Johnsonville 6037. Between the two disconnected sections lies a paper road. This legal road has existed on paper for more than 50 years since the days of Broadmeadows’ development in the early 1970s and is part of Wellington City Council's Northern Growth Management Framework.

Letterboxing

Letterboxing is another form of treasure hunting. It uses clues instead of coordinates. We have made the container here both a letterbox and a geocache.

Because letterboxing began in 1854, before GPS existed, the finder follows written instructions or clues to discover the container. Here are the clues for letterboxers.

  1. Between 81 and 101.
  2. Between two brows.
  3. Seven or eight steps more or less from the higher brow.
  4. Two and a half steps up.
  5. Within three steps.

As with other letterboxes, this geocache contains a logbook and a rubber stamp. When letterboxers find the container, they stamp the letterbox logbook with their personal stamp, and also stamp their own sketch book with the letterbox’s stamp as an imprint souvenir of their visit. The stamp and logbook remain in the letterbox for the next visitor to use. To read more about letterboxing, visit Letterboxing North America or Atlas Quest.

Geocaching

This geocaching version, as a Letterbox Hybrid, combines the use of GPS and the stamps of letterboxing. Note that the cache is not located at the posted coordinates. Here are the clues for geocachers.

  1. High brow is 538 metres from the reference point on Burma Road
  2. High brow is 57 metres from trailhead 1
  3. High brow is 159 metres from trailhead 2
  4. Cache is 6 metres from high brow at 346 degrees true
  5. Use GeoCheck to confirm final coordinates and see an additional clue

Container contents

Inside the Letterbox Hybrid container are:

  • A pre-inked rubber stamp (for use by letterboxers)
  • A combined logbook (for use by letterboxers and geocachers)

Note 1: The rubber stamp is not a trade item. It needs to stay within the cache to be used by letterboxers to record their visit.

Note 2: The container does not contain an ink pad. Letterboxers please bring your own if you need one.

Comment on terrain rating

We have rated the terrain as 2.5 stars. There are some fairly short steep sections particularly on the approach from either trailhead. Take care when coming back downhill which can be slippery underfoot, particularly when it is wet.
