Harry "Apple Cheeks" Lumley
A micro geocache hidden on the Island at the Harry Lumley Community Centre.



This Geocache honours an Owen Sound NHL hero


Born in Owen Sound in 1926, Lumley — known as "Apple Cheeks", grew up playing local minor sports, and wound up being a top notch goaltender. Lumley starred for several years with the Owen Sound Mercurys and later with the Owen Sound Orphans and then the Barrie Colts, before being drafted into the NHL.

Lumley actually made his NHL debut at age 17, as the youngest goaltender with the New York Rangers. Their regular goalie was unable to play, and Harry happened to be at that Toronto Maple Leafs game in 1943.

After officially joining the NHL, Harry Lumley played with the Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Black Hawks, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins. In 1950 Lumley led the Red Wings to a Stanley Cup championship, and in 1954 with the Maple Leafs he won the Vezina Trophy with a GAA of 1.86. His 13 shutouts that year was a NHL record that stood until Chicago's Tony Esposito in 1970. Harry was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1980.

While Lumley originated the tactic of making a pocket at shin level in goalie pads so pucks would drop straight on the ice instead of deflecting off them to an opponent, he missed the most important development in goalie equipment. He played before the advent of the face mask, hence his nickname "Apple Cheeks".

Harry moved back to Owen Sound in 1962, where the Owen Sound Bayshore Community Centre was renamed in his honour.
