What is texture in a rock?
The texture of a rock is the size, shape, and arrangement of the grains (for sedimentary rocks) or crystals (for igneous and metamorphic rocks).
Aphanitic texture
This texture describes a very fine-grained rock where individual crystals can be seen only with the aid of a microscope, i.e. the rock is mostly groundmass. An aphanitic texture is developed when magma is erupted at the Earth's surface and cools too quickly for large crystals to grow.
The setting
At the coordinates, you will see a dyke intruded into limestones. Forget the lighter coloured rock (the limestones) and focus on the dark/reddish coloured rock.
This rock (dyke) was intruded into Cretaceous age limestones during the latter stages of the implantation of the Sintra Mountain.
Validating your FIND:
By the very nature of this type of texture, the individual grains present in this rock can only be seen under the petrographic microscope. However, let's see how good your poewers of observation are in relation to the mineralogy of this rock.
- Approach the reddish coloured dyke and look closely. IS the surface uniformly smooth or not? Based on this observation you should be able to tell whether the grain size is fine or very fine. Which do you think?
- Rub your finger across the rock face and say whethere it has left a stain on your finger or not? Yes? Go to question 3. No? Go to question 4.
- What colour is the stain? Given that colour what element would you say is responsible for the stain. Or putting it another way, minerals with what element will cause this?
- if no stain is left on your finger, it means that the rock is fresh and unweathered. Do you agree with this statement?
- Take a photo of your nick written on a piece of paper at the south end of the beach so that you can see the arch in the photo.

A que se refere a textura numa rocha?
A textura de uma rocha é o tamanho, forma e disposição dos grãos (para as rochas sedimentares) ou cristais (para as rochas ígneas e metamórficas).
Textura afanítica
Esta textura descreve uma rocha de granulametria muito fina onde cristais individuais podem ser vistos apenas com o auxílio de um microscópio. Ou seja, a rocha é principalmente uma massa de cristais muito finos. Uma textura afanítica é desenvolvida quando o magma entra em erupção muito perto da superfície da Terra e arrefece muito rapidamente para o crescimento de cristais grandes.
Enquadramento
Nas coordenadas, verás um dique intruído nos calcários. Esquece a pedra de cor mais clara (os calcários) e concentra-te na rocha de cor escura.
Esta rocha (um dique) foi intruído nos calcários da idade do Cretáceo durante os últimos estágios da implantação da Serra de Sintra.
Para validares a tua visita:
Pela própria natureza deste tipo de textura, os grãos individuais presentes nessa rocha só podem ser vistos ao microscópio petrográfico. No entanto, vamos ver o quão bons são os as tuas observações em relação à mineralogia dessa rocha.
1- Aproxime-te do dique de cor avermelhada e olha atentamente. A superfície é uniformemente lisa ou não? Com base nessa observação, deves poder deduzir se o tamanho dos grãos são finos ou muito finos. Que achas?
2- Esfregua o dedo na face da rocha e diz se deixa uma mancha no dedo ou não? Sim? Vai para a pergunta 3. Não? Vai para a pergunta 4.
3- Que cor é a mancha? Dada a cor, qual o elemento dirias ser responsável pela mancha? Ou, de outra forma, que minerais com que elemento causará isso?
4- Se nenhuma mancha for deixada no teu dedo, isso significa que a pedra está fresca. Estás de acordo com esta afirmação?
5- Tira uma foto do teu nick escrito em um pedaço de papel no extremo sul da praia para poder ver o arco na foto.
