What is A Weir?
A weir or low head dam is a barrier across the width of a small to medium size river that alters the flow characteristics of water and usually results in a change in the height of the river level.
Weirs are used to help prevent flooding, measure water discharge, help control invasive species. and help render waterways more navigable.
The Weir here on Jackson Creek is a 3 level concrete. The lower level allows the water to pass freely. When a large amount of rain has fallen the water level behind the Weir rises. The Weir is designed to allow more water to pass through the notches. As water levels increase behind the Weir more water is allowed to pass through helping to limit water downstream and therefore eliminate flooding through the city of Peterborough.
Some of the more common types of that are use help eliminate flooding are.
Rectangular weir:
- It is a standard shape of weir. The top edge of weir may be sharp crested or narrow crested.
- It is generally suitable for larger flowing channels.
Triangular weir:
- The shape of the weir is actually reverse triangle like V. so, it is also called V-notch weir.
- This type of weirs are well suitable for measuring discharge over small flows with greater accuracy.
Trapezoidal weir:
- Trapezoidal weir is also called as Cippoletti weir. This is trapezoidal in shape and is the modification of rectangular weir with slightly higher capacity for same crest strength.
- The sides are inclined outwards
