In time of Corona you may follow all the instructions of the listing virtually using Google Street View. This way no need to visit live all the tour stops to calculate the final's coordinates. Only for signing the logbook you should schedule a visit on Crete as soon as the Corona crisis is behind us.
On our trip from Chania to Georgioupoli we do not want to miss a visit to the Akrotiri peninsula.
If you stop at the small but beautiful beach of Livadi (waypoint A), you will unpack your bathing suit. We were here in winter and preferred to set the dashboard as a table for our second breakfast.
At the northern tip of the Akrotiri peninsula you will find the tidal pools formed by the sea. At waypoint B there is an earth cache, it's listing explains the phenomenon very nicely. The image that you need at this point for the calculation of the final's coordinates can be found in the listing of this earth cache. (Google Street View is not available here.)
At waypoint C you can see the silhouette of the Agia Triada monastery from a distance. If you are going to be in Crete then it is definitely worth a visit. Due to its architecture and size, the Agia Triada Monastery is the most impressive monastery of the Venetian era.
Suda Bay War Cemetery was established by Australian war grave units after World War II. The bodies of Allied soldiers, mostly New Zealanders, British and Australians, were relocated there from various locations in the region. Fatalities from the First World War lie in 19 graves. Around 10 million soldiers were killed in this war and approximately the same number of civilians lost their lives in this war. In the days of Corona, reports caught my attention that the so-called Spanish flu claimed another 50 million lives at the end of the First World War from 1918 to 1920.
The Intzedin fortress was built by the Turks at the end of the 19th century and has a dark history in the previous century. It was a prison for decades and many communist political prisoners were executed here during the civil war after the Second World War. The last role of the fortress, as a place of captivity for political opponents, became an inspiration for literary works and for the film industry. Among others the film "The Days of 36", a dramatic independent Greek underground art film from 1972 contains references and recordings from the fortress "Intzedin". The fortress is closed today and can only be visited on the feast day of Agios Eleftherios (December 14th and 15th), where the chapel built by the prisoners is used to celebrate.
From the street (waypoint E), the fortress is barely recognizable.

After the two rather sad stations at D and E, we come to the pleasant end of this section of our "Virtual Trip to Crete" at waypoint F. Here in Georgioupoli we look over to the little church of Agios Nikolaos, which lies at the end of a not always dry footpath in the middle of the sea before we are going to sit in one of the nice taverns.

Auf unserer Fahrt von Chania nach Georgioupoli wollen wir es nicht versäumen, der Halbinsel Akrotiri einen Besuch abzustatten. Wenn Ihr am kleinen aber feinen Strand von Livadi (Wegepunkt A) anhaltet, werdet Ihr sicher die Badesachen auspacken. Wir waren im Winter hier und haben es vorgezogen, das Armaturenbrett als Tisch für unser zweites Frühstück zu decken.
An der Nordspitze der Halbinsel Akrotiri findet Ihr die vom Meer geformten Tidenpools. Am Wegepunkt B gibt es einen Earth-Cache, in dessen Listing das Phänomen sehr schön erklärt wird. Das Bild, welches Ihr an dieser Stelle für die Berechnung der Finalkoordinaten braucht, findet Ihr im Listing dieses Earth-Caches. (Google-Street-View ist an dieser Stelle nicht verfügbar.)
Bei Wegepunkt C könnt Ihr aus der Ferne die Silhouette des Klosters Agia Triada erkennen. Wenn Ihr dann auf Kreta sein werdet, lohnt auf jeden Fall ein Besuch. Das Kloster Agia Triada ist aufgrund seiner Architektur und Größe das eindrucksvollste Kloster der venezianischen Epoche.
Der Suda Bay War Cemetery ist eine Kriegsgräberstätte, die nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg von australischen Kriegsgräber-Einheiten errichtet wurde. Dorthin wurden die Leichname alliierter Soldaten, meist Neuseeländer, Briten und Australier von verschiedenen Stellen der Region umgebettet. In 19 Gräbern liegen Gefallene aus dem Ersten Weltkrieg. In diesem Krieg fielen rund 10 Millionen Soldaten und etwa gleich viele Zivilisten ließen in diesem Krieg ihr Leben. In Zeiten von Corona haben Berichte meine Aufmerksamkeit geweckt, dass die sogenannte Spanische Grippe am Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs von 1918 bis1920 rund 50 Millionen Menschenleben forderte.
Die Festung von Intzedin wurde Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts von den Türken erbaut und hat ihre dunkle Geschichte im vorigen Jahrhundert. Über Jahrzehnte war es ein Gefängnis und im Bürgerkrieg nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurden hier viele kommunistische politische Gefangenen hingerichtet. Die letzte Rolle der Festung, als Ort der Gefangenschaft von politischen Gegnern, wurde eine Inspiration für literarische Werke und für die Filmindustrie. Unter anderen der Film "Die Tage von 36", ein dramatischer unabhängiger griechischer Underground-Kunstfilm von 1972 beinhaltet Referenzen und Aufnahmen von der Festung "Intzedin". Die Festung ist heute geschlossen und kann nur am Festtag von Agios Eleftherios (14. und 15. Dezember) besucht werden, wo in der von den Gefangenen errichteten Kapelle gefeiert wird.
Von der Strasse aus (Wegepunkt E), ist die Festung nur undeutlich zu erkennen.

Nach den beiden eher trostlosen Stationen an D und E kommen wir bei Wegepunkt F an den wieder erfreulichen Schlusspunkt dieser Etappe. Hier in Georgioupoli schauen wir hinüber zu dem Kirchlein Agios Nikolaos, das am Ende eines nicht immer trockenen Fusswegs mitten im Meer liegt, bevor wir uns in einer der Tavernen bedienen lassen.

Σε περιόδους Corona, μπορείτε να ακολουθήσετε όλες τις οδηγίες αυτής της περιγραφής με το Google Street View, έτσι μην χρειάζεται να είστε πραγματικά στην περιοχή για να υπολογίσετε τις συντεταγμένες του φινάλε. Απλώς πρέπει να αναβάλλετε την υπογραφή του ημερολογίου μέχρι την ημέρα που πραγματικά θα ταξιδέψετε στην Κρήτη.

Στο ταξίδι μας από τα Χανιά στη Γεωργιούπολη, δεν θέλουμε να χάσουμε μια επίσκεψη στη χερσόνησο του Ακρωτηρίου. Αν σταματήσετε στη μικρή αλλά πανέμορφη παραλία του Λιβαδιού (Σημείο Διαδρομής Α), θα φορέσετε το μαγιό σας. Ήμασταν εμείς εδώ το χειμώνα και προτιμούσαμε να χρησιμοποιήσουμε το ταμπλό ως τραπέζι για το δεύτερο πρωινό μας.
Στο βόρειο άκρο της χερσονήσου του Ακρωτηρίου θα βρείτε τις παλιρροιακές πισίνες που σχηματίζονται από τη θάλασσα. Στο Σημείο Διαδρομής Β υπάρχει ένα earth-cache. Η περιγραφή του εξηγεί πολύ καλά το φαινόμενο. Η εικόνα που χρειάζεστε σε αυτό το σημείο για τον υπολογισμό των συντεταγμένων του φίναλε βρίσκεται στην περιγραφή αυτού του earth-cache. (Το Google Street View δεν είναι διαθέσιμο εδώ.)
Στο Σημείο Διαδρομής C μπορείτε να δείτε τη σιλουέτα του μοναστηριού της Αγίας Τριάδας από μακριά. Όταν θα είστε στην Κρήτη τότε αξίζει σίγουρα να το επισκεφτείτε. Λόγω της αρχιτεκτονικής και του μεγέθους του, το Μοναστήρι της Αγίας Τριάδας είναι το πιο εντυπωσιακό μοναστήρι της Ενετικής εποχής.
Το Suda Bay War Cemetery είναι ένα νεκροταφείο πολέμου που ιδρύθηκε από αυστραλιανό οργανισμό μετά τον Β 'Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο. Τα πτώματα των συμμαχικών στρατιωτών, κυρίως Νεοζηλανδών, Βρετανών και Αυστραλών, μεταφέρθηκαν εκεί από διάφορες τοποθεσίες της περιοχής. Οι θάνατοι από τον Πρώτο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο βρίσκονται σε 19 τάφους. Περίπου 10 εκατομμύρια στρατιώτες σκοτώθηκαν σε αυτόν τον πόλεμο και περίπου ο ίδιος αριθμός αμάχων έχασαν τη ζωή τους σε αυτόν τον πόλεμο. Στις μέρες του Κορωναϊού με ενδιέφεραν οι αναφορές που λένε ότι η λεγόμενη Ισπανική Γρίπη σκότωσε περίπου 50 εκατομμύρια ζωές στο τέλος του Πρώτου Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου από το 1918 έως το 1920.
Το Φρούριο Ιτζεδίν χτίστηκε από τους Τούρκους στα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα και έχει μια σκοτεινή ιστορία τον προηγούμενο αιώνα. Από τα σκοτεινά και ανήλιαγα μεσαιωνικά μπουντρούμια του για δεκαετίες πέρασαν εκατοντάδες πολιτικοί κρατούμενοι, πρώτα απ' όλα κομμουνιστές, αλλά στην περίοδο της δικτατορίας των συνταγματαρχών και πολιτικοί ασχέτως ιδεολογίας. Ο τελευταίος αυτός ρόλος του φρουρίου, ως χώρος φυλάκισης πολιτικών κρατουμένων, που με την αντίσταση τους πάλεψαν για τις δημοκρατικές τους ιδέες στάθηκε αφορμή για να περάσει στην ιστορία της λογοτεχνίας και του κινηματογράφου. Οι ταινίες «Μέρες του 36» και «Τα πέτρινα χρόνια» έχουν βασικές αναφορές και πλάνα από το χώρο του Ιτζεδίν.
Το φρούριο έχει χαρακτηριστεί διατηρητέο μνημείο και σήμερα παραμένει κλειστό για το κοινό. Η μόνη μέρα που μπορείτε να επισκεφτείτε το Ιτζεδίν είναι στις 14 και 15 Δεκεμβρίου, όταν εορτάζει ο ναός του Αγίου Ελευθερίου που κτίστηκε από τους ίδιους τους φυλακισμένους.
Από το δρόμο (σημείο Ε), το φρούριο είναι ελάχιστα αναγνωρίσιμο.

Μετά τους δύο ζοφερούς σταθμούς D και E, φτάνουμε στο ευχάριστο τέλος αυτού του τμήμα του «Virtual Tour to Crete» στο Σημείο Διαδρομής F. Εδώ στη Γεωργιούπολη βλέπουμε το εκκλησάκι του Αγίου Νικολάου, που βρίσκεται στο τέλος ενός όχι πάντα στεγνού μονοπατιού στη μέση της θάλασσας, πριν πάμε σε μια από τις καλές ταβέρνες.
Ρίξτε μια εικονική ματιά στα έξι Σημεία Διαδρομής που προαναφέρθηκαν και θα μπορείτε εύκολα να εντοπίσετε τις έξι εικόνες που τις βλέπετε στην αγγλική λίστα παραπάνω ή στην γκαλερί εικόνων. Εκεί θα βρείτε επίσης το υπολογιστικό φύλλο που θα σας οδηγήσει στις συντεταγμένες του φινάλε.
