Bend in the Road
You are standing in the middle of what used to be the Fraser Highway. Now, the highway has been aligned to the south to eliminate this bend.
Notice that the road is made of concrete. The paving of the entire route Pacific Highway from the Westminster Bridge to the United States border was completed and formally opened on Labour Day, 1923. It followed the route from what is now the Patello Bridge, along King George Boulevard to the King George Skytrain Station, and then along the Fraser Highway to Fry's Corner, and then south on 176th Street to the border.
Wander Inn
In the 1920's, a business known as the Wander Inn was established on the NW Corner of what is now the Fraser Highway and 168 Street by the McClement family. This is where the Fortis building is now.
The business consisted of a combined confectionery, gas station and dining room which was heated by an elaborate stone fireplace. The room could easily be converted to a ballroom and was used for dances, wedding receptions and banquets.
Mr. McClement was an electrical engineer and built and operated his own Delco Electric Generator which supplied all his electrical needs. for many years.
Mr. and Mrs. McClement had three children: Bill, Frank and Martha. After the death of her parents, Martha operated the business for several years and then sold it to Mr. and Mrs. A. Bay in the 1940's
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Beechey later owned the Wander Inn and operated it as a banquet hall from 1948 to 1969 when it was sold to a Mr. Joe Barbieri and John Ciulla who converted it into an Italian restaurant.
Unfortunately, the former Wander Inn was destroyed by fire in 1970.
Sneddon's
Sneddon's Gas Station was located on the Northeast corner, where the church is now.
