The Shelbyville square was laid out in 1810 in a central block formation surrounded by 4 streets. Merchants and tradesmen located their businesses on the blocks surrounding the courthouse square. Lots with street frontage facing the courthouse initially sold for prices 40 times higher than land near the edge of the town grid. This design, known as the "Shelbyville square" or "Shelbyville plan", was the prototype for numerous other public squares created throughout the 19th century in towns in southern Middle Tennessee, other parts of the southeastern United States, the American Midwest, and Texas. This the is the fifth courthouse for Bedford County that was built in 1935. Originally built to conduct all the business in Shelbyville and Bedford County, the county just build a new complex with a new jail out near the airport off Murf. Highway. The historical society is trying to take over this building but at time of this cache the plans are all still up in the air. Have fun walking back into history, there is really more history than can be done on a simple walk around cache. Maybe there is another cache that talks about the History of Shelbyville?
