Welcome to the Ironton Rail Trail "IRT". This scenic paved 5 mile loop features 35 caches of various difficulty and terrains with multiple different containers.
History - The Ironton Railroad was a shortline railroad in Lehigh County. Originally built in 1861 to haul iron ore and limestone to blast furnaces along the Lehigh River, traffic later shifted to carrying Portland cement when local iron mining declined in the early 20th century. Much of the railroad had already been abandoned when it became part of Conrail in 1976, and the last of its trackage was removed in 1984.
Current - The Ironton Rail Trail right-of-way was purchased in 1996 from Conrail for the purpose of maintaining it's historical significance. It has been transformed into a multi-use, historic recreational trail for everyone. The 5 mile loop is flat paved with many access points. Much of the maintenance is from volunteers, working closely with scouts and local groups to keep the trail clean and safe. There are plenty of benches and picnic areas around the loop, as well as restored relics and informational signs detailing the history.

All caches are accessed from the trail or just off of it. Please be respectful of the private homes and business along the trail. Hints will be given on each page.
