Geocache Description:

Join us along a series of caches celebrating wonderful trees. We are new to hiding caches so hope you enjoy them. There is nothing quite as lovely as a magnificent tree, so why not stop to admire them as you seek out these caches?

The cache can be accessed without going onto private property!

In front of you is the former school site of Charlton Park Junior School. In 1935 the sisters of La Sainte Union, set up Charlton Park Girls School as part of the convent. In 1958 Whitefriars Boys School opened at Ashley Manor, London Road. In the 1980s the schools merged and buildings expanded at the main sites. The junior school site lay empty for many years, and is now a pub and restaurant.

The giant redwood in front of you was protected in 1979 with a tree preservation order due to its importance to the local amenity. The beautiful tall, evergreen, coniferous tree in front of you is a Sequoia Wellingtonia or giant redwood. Species can reach 90m in height when fully grown, with the trunk up to 7m in diameter. The crown is narrowly cone-shaped, with down-swept branches. All the leaves are scale-like with egg/ball-shaped cones.

Take time out to admire its beauty!
