Geocache Description:

The Shire

Please use care when retrieving. There is no need to pull on the host container, simply twist the top, nor any need to touch any of the rocks. Thanks for taking care when searching.

This cache is all about the destination.

A shire, according to Tolkien, is a small but beautiful idyllic location and this location is certainly that. Hobbits live in underground houses called hobbit-holes.  Here you will find one.

The type of construction is called dry stacking meaning that the only thing holding this wonderful creation is gravity, weight and friction. The home itself was all handlayed. At the time this was written up there were over 1000 man hours put into building this house and setting and there is still a lot in the planning. The types of stones came from all over Ontario. The house is built with stones from Buckhorn, ON; the flagstone is from Wiarton, ON and Orilla armour stone is used for the retaining wall around the pond.

You’re more than welcome to take a peek inside. Please be respectful.

The main cache container was generously created and donated by Murfster.  Please take your time walking around, exploring and enjoying this unique fantasy setting.
