The cache is NOT at the posted coordinates. Solve the puzzle to obtain the coordinates of the physical container.

In these grim times, one question that I have both asked and answered begins, "do you know anyone directly who ..." Until recently, I had answered no. However, I learned that a former professor of mine had died after contracting COVID-19. He was famous for many things, and this unknown cache is based on one of his lesser known inventions--but it's the thing for which I remember him best. He invented many games, puzzles, and recursive sequences, and while I was a student he had issued a challenge about one of the latter that got him into trouble. He had come up with a number sequence and proved that the ratio of the number in the sequence to its position converged to 0.5. During a July 1988 lecture, he offered $10,000 ($21,819 in 2020 dollars) to anyone who could find and prove the position in this "crazy number sequence" after which the ratio of the number to its position was always within a certain tolerance to 0.5. Well, within two weeks of issuing the challenge, it was conquered. He claimed he had misspoke, intending the reward to be merely $1000. A man of his honor, he issued a check for $10,000, but the gracious conqueror never cashed the large check, instead keeping it as a souvenir. (He did take the $1000, however!)

Enough with the backstory, here's the puzzle:

Don't worry: you don't need to solve the professor's original challenge in order to determine coordinates to the geocache!

You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude.
