As usual, when I place geocaches, it is a multi-step process. First, scout out the trail, and make sure it is appropriate for caches, and determine what caches may already be there. Second, look for interesting places along the trail, don't just throw a container ever 161m or so apart. Third, take coordinate measurments, plan the container in its hide spot, plan the theme.
I am a fan of having a cache on a trail early on in the trail, yet beyond the first few steps. This place fit the bill very well, and as I found my future hiding spot and took measurements, I toyed with various themes in my head.
And, at that moment, a huge osprey flew overhead, and circled.
At that moment, I wasn't geocaching any longer. I just stopped and watched this absolutely majestic creature literally float effortlessly in the air, knowing full well that it had the power to go along with this grace to plunge into the cold Atlantic on a split second if it chose to do so.
As the fish hawk continued on about its business, I got back to taking my measurements and a few photos.
Amazgingly - I returned a few days later to place the actual cache container, and on the way back down the trail in this spot, I was again greeted by an osprey.
So come along for a smile on your geocaching map, and if you are a fan of hiking an nature, chances are an even bigger smile on your face.
The cache is a 1L camo'd container, with a log sheet and some swag upon initial hide.
