Rutherford County is becoming a lot more colorful these days. Watch for it. Walls on the outside of businesses, inside restaurants, and along the underpass of a main thoroughfare are decorated with murals. More are coming and the public is invited to participate. Rutherford Arts Alliance has organized the Boro Arts Mural Festival Oct. 18-20 and all ages are encouraged to be a part of the design depicting scenes from Murfreesboro. Promoting public murals is an initiative of the nonprofit arts advocacy group. “We’re looking for this to be a way to attract visitors,” said Andrea Loughry, member of the Arts Alliance and local arts advocate. “Working with the (Rutherford County) Convention and Visitors Bureau, we’d like to have enough public murals and sculptures that we could attract visitors with walking tours and driving trips.”
Arts improve the image' of communities
Research shows that public art makes a community more livable and can attract tourists, Loughry said. Arts for Americans, in collaboration with the Public Art Network Advisory Council, performed a study that showed 70% of Americans believe that "arts improve the image and identity" of their communities. And 72% believe "the arts unite our communities regardless of age, race and ethnicity." “They are meant to make our lives better. They are meant to enhance the area,” said Ron Alley, founder of Carpe Artista arts program in Smyrna. Mira Patel, a member of the Rutherford Arts Alliance Youth Council, was one of the first to suggest the addition of murals to downtown Murfreesboro. Last year the Central Magnet high schooler approached two businesses about painting a mural with collaborative help of the community. Business owners are happy about the visual attention, too. The Arts Alliance is coordinating with a dozen merchants who want murals. “I have eight to 10 designs from artists. … What I plan on doing is connecting those business owners with murals,” said Ginny Togrye, Murfreesboro's first painting laureate.
