Geocache Description:

Welcome to Magens Bay - one of the world's most beautiful beaches!  This will allow you to earn a smilie while you enjoy this great beach.  Open daily 8am to 5pm.  Please be aware that there is an admission fee for the beach; 12 years and up $5 each; parking $2.

Longshore drift from longshore current is a geological process that consists of the transportation of sediments along a coast parallel to the shoreline, which is dependent on oblique incoming wave direction.

Longshore drift affects all sediment sizes. It works in slightly different ways depending on the sediment.  Sand is largely affected by the oscillating force of breaking waves on on the coast.

Start at observation point 1 and make your way towards observation point 2. While at each point observe the volume of small particle material, mid-size material, to large size material (this may include sand, pebbles, coral, shells, and etc.)

Question 1: Which area has the greater amount of small material? (Point 1, Point 2, or somewhere in between).

Question 2: Which area has the greater amount of large material? (Point 1, Point 2, or somewhere in between).

Question 3: Based on your observations what direction does the longshore drift move?  Please explain your reasoning.

Question 4: What natural or man-made shore erosion defenses do you see?

After taking notes of your observations, continue enjoying this beach.  Please email or message your answers when you return home from your refreshing vacation.
