Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Avondale trail system.

The Avondale Trail system consists of 3 trail loops:
~Westbrook Trail (blue), a 2.3 km loop with its trail head behind the Avondale Community Hall
~Mosher's Trail (yellow), a 2.0 km route accessed either from the Westbrook Trail or from its trail head at the Avondale Sky Winery.
~Tunnel Quarry Trail (turquoise), a short 0.5 loop accessed from the Mosher Trail using the Avondale Sky Winery trail head.
All three trails can be combined to create a longer trip, with a short walk on the Avondale Cross road to return to the trail head of choice.

Difficultly level is moderate, as there is uneven terrain, steep drop offs and inclines.

These trails take you through a landscape dominated by an Acadian mixed-wood forest, interspersed with rolling agricultural land, and highlight the Westbrook brook. Yellow reflective trail markers are found along all trails, and signage is posted at junctions. Karst formations, such as sinkholes, caves, and sinking streams are found within this region. They are the result of water acting on comparatively soluble rocks, in this case Gypsum. Gypsum karst forests are rare in Canada and the majority of occurrence is in this region of Nova Scotia. Karst forests contain many rare plants, and karst caves provide many of the province's most important bat hibernacula.
