Monkey Magic
This is a cult classic TV series. Started in 1978 it only lasted 2 seasons before being cancelled. I defy you to get the theme song out of your head having heard it. Originally called Monkey, it became known as Monkey Magic because of the theme. The principle character is, unsurprisingly called Monkey.
He is a stone monkey, king of a monkey tribe who becomes Master of the Stable in heaven and ultimately Keeper of the peach garden of immortality. He eats the peaches, becomes immortal but is punished by being put under a mountain for 500 years.

Eventually by a monk who wants him to accompany him on a pilgrimage from China to India to fetch holy Scriptures.
Monkey recruits two other fellow travelers for the journey, Pigsy and Sandy. The Great Journey Begins with Yu Lung, a dragon eats the monks horse and in remorse, turns into a horse and joins them on the journey as well.
Occasionally the dragon/horse becomes human in order to assist the four intrepid heros in their journey. Even as a human the others continue to refer to him as horse. I suppose Even Monsters Can Be People. He is not the only one to be able to transform himself. Monkey can turn into a hornet and can also grow and shrink as well.
Now many adventures ensue on their journey. They visit The Land With Two Suns and the Land Of Locusts. They fight The Dogs of Death, and The Most Monstrous Monster, the Vampire Master. Along they way they learn many lessons which were often The Beginning Of Wisdom but just as often it was a case of Pearls Before Swine.
Keeping with the source material, the group eventually complete their quest. The story has been told in several TV adaptations. The last was an animated series that only lasted 13 episodes before being cancelled.
