- “A well- exercised dog is a happy, healthy, quiet dog.” Dog parks provide dogs with the space and freedom to run off leash with other dogs, whilst being safely supervised.
- A well socialised dog is less likely to develop behaviour problems such as aggression and excessive barking.
- For many people, their dogs are their only companions. For some, going to the dog park gives them a reason to get dressed, go out, socialise with others and play with their dog. Dog parks have been proven to promote physical fitness and improve the mental state of owners.

The key to a contented dog is exercising them daily. Cairns has 51 areas that are specifically allocated for exercising and socialising your dog off lead, called off-leash areas.Yet for such a seemingly dog friendly place Cairns is not what it seems. Dogs are not allowed in the CBD, south esplanade, stinger net areas, sporting reserves, wetlands, BBQ areas, popular swimming holes and national parks.
Some more dog friendly walks with your furry friend are Gomborra park in Brinsmead, the trek up the fire trail hill to the start of the Green arrow (but no further), Smithfield conservation park on leash, 2kms of the north side esplanade plus dog friendly Muddys cafe. Dog friendly beaches Holloway, Trinity Beach, Bramston Beach, Machans Beach, Buchans Point, Clifton Beach, Ellis Beach and Kewarra Beach.
Emerald Creek Falls about 60kms west of Cairns on the Tablelands is a great croc-free spot to swim with your dog too – it is dog friendly (on leash) and also has bush walks. If you’re out on the Tablelands make sure you visit the pet friendly Herberton historical village where dogs are welcome to explore with you (on lead).
Dog friendly eating includes Ozmosis in Edge Hill, the Wharf cafe in the city and you can also take dogga to Bunnings and Limberlost and markets.
