Welcome to beautiful Ladies Wildwood Park.
Across the street from the more spacious Wheelock Park, this little gem is not without it's own merit. Created in 1887, this 17 acre grove was created after Caroline Ingersoll found out that this tree laden patch was set to be leveled for lumber.
Upset by the thought, Caroline got almost 100 local women to donate the $1,300 dollars needed to purchase the land. Although I was unable to find the exact historical reference for the unique name, it's easy to guess the origin. "Ladies" as a tribute to the generous Ladies who squirreled away the money needed ($100 was worth about $2,617 at the time this geocache was place.) And "Wildwood" for the romantic twisting of the woodland pines at this location.
As for the previously mentioned merits, the park offers looping bike paths created with the joy of riding in mind, a woodsy sneak through for High Schoolers heading to class, a lit dog path that my husky gives one tail up, and hiding spots for days for any Hide N seek enthusiast.
We hope you enjoy the geocache here. The location and swag were inspired by the name of this park. Caroline said this park is "a gift from myself and the other subscribers, to be forever kept a public pleasure ground …" We think our geocache is doing just that.
Clues for the Cache
Weave your way through the paths until you see the remains of what was once one of the towering members of the park. Within one of the larger fallen soldiers is a hidden cleave. Our small snap tight geocache is placed there. Our swags is inspired by the ladies who tucked away the money for this park in locked jewelry boxes and cabinets.
DO NOT MOVE THE CACHE LOCATION ONCE FOUND. Please put it right back where you found it.
