Geocache Description:

Cessnock to Millfield

#1 Cessnock to Millfield

To get to Millfield travel along Wollombi Road. Start at the intersection of Maitland Road, Annandale Road and Wollombi Road in Cessnock. You will travel through the suburbs of Bellbird and Greta Main before reaching the little community of Millfield. On the way, there will be right hand turns to Pelton and Ellalong and another turn off leads to Paxton.

Your first stop will be at the old chimneys in Bellbird left behind after the Bellbird Mine Disaster in 1923. After you find your cache you can visit the park in Bellbird where the memorial for the miners who died from the disaster is situated.

The remains found at ground zero are the 4 chimneys from the old mine that was on the opposite side of the railway track. The entry for the works was through tunnels under the railway line.

On the 1st September 1923, 21 miners died as a result of a fire in No1 workings at Bellbird Colliery.

This is my first hide and I hope you will enjoy your visit to our area. The cache is camouflaged Sistema container. I received it from one of the HAVOC meeting last year. Its an easy find but a place worth visiting.
