The Victoria Advocate is the second oldest newspaper in continuous operation in Texas. Beginning as the weekly "Texan Advocate" in 1846 the first issue was published on May 8, 1846 - the same day as the Battle of Palo Alto. The Victoria Advocate was also the first newspaper to print the "Popeye" comic strip (known as "Thimble Theatre" at that time). Not only has The Victoria Advocate been an important institution for the community for many years, on a personal note, your cache owner was employed there for five years as a staff photographer right after my high school graduation. I have a million memories of working there - watching the presses roll and the reporters work and going all over town to photograph everything from the annual Livestock Show to breaking news events.

* This second photograph of the City Historical Board is gone now, but I leave the photo as a record of the information that was here.
The coordinates will take you close to the geocache. The Historical Marker and other information is a short walk - about half a block - east (away from the direction of DeLeon Plaza). You are looking for a bison tube and it is actually completely out of sight to any casual observer. But, a quick lift of a brightly colored object will net you this smiley.
