Toombullup Middle Creek Caches
Middle Two Step
The Toombullup State Forest is in north-east Victoria on Taungurung Traditional Lands, approximately 36km from Benalla and 50km from Mansfield.
The area is rich in Ned Kelly History, only a short drive away is Stringybark Creek where in 1878 the Kelly Gang members became the most wanted outlaws in Australia after Police Constables Lonigan, Scanlan and Sergeant Kennedy were shot and killed. (See the area near GC1RH9Y for more on that side of the Toombullup)
Middle Creek is situated close to the middle of the Toombullup and could be considered a boundary line for the western border of the Rural City of Wangaratta LGA. Accessing the caches in this section of the forest is not for the novice adventurer. The creek was walked from Madhouse Road and it was very slow going due to vegetation density. There are sections where it is easy walking but come prepared for a battle. It may seem easier to drop down from Webbs road or Middle Creek Track but be aware of the steep descent and eventual ascent you will undertake. Hunting is very popular in the forest and you will come across game trails that at times feel like walking tracks. It is recommended that you wear something highly visible so that you are easily seen. Phone reception is only available at the top of the ridges and due to the difficult access you should definitely take a locator beacon with you.
The caches in this series highlight a few hidden gems along Middle Creek which I hope you enjoy once you make it to them. It’s probably going to be more about the adventure of reaching the caches than the sites themselves that you’ll remember. Dogs are permitted in the park. These caches are not recommended in summer months or warmer weather. I was prepared to get my feet wet, will you?
You are looking for a painted bright yellow container hidden in between a gap in some rock, high up on the bank away from any flood water. See spoiler photo for help.
HAPPY ADVENTURING!
