About this hit song:

During a Rolling Stones concert in West Berlin in 1982, thousands of balloons were released, which inspired Carlo Karges, the guitarist for Nena, who was attending the show, to write the antiwar song "99 Luftballons."

The German pop singer and group, Nena, released the international hit song "99 Luftballons" in 1983 and the English version "99 Red Balloons" one year later.  The English version reached #1 in the U.S. in 1984.
