This cache is located in State Game Lands 198 just outside of Gallitzin (Tunnelhill), PA. In this area was the now ghost town of Bennington. In the 1870's, Cambria Iron acquired the holdings of the Blair Iron and Coal Company and its works at Bennington. A coke-fired iron furnace had been in blast here as early as 1846. Throughout the 1870's and 1880's Cambria Iron operated 100 coke ovens, employed 300 men and built 95 houses at Bennington. This cache highlights the remnants of some of those old coke ovens, these amazing parts of the history of this area. I counted 20 coke ovens in this line, some in better shape than others.
From the parking waypoint, the cache is only a very short, but there is so much else to see in this area. Take a walk and check out the nearby caches Bennington's Forgotten (GC2ZT3G) highlighting Bennington Cemetery, A Ride in History: The Red Arrow (GC32DK8), highlighting the 1947 train accident in this area, & Tranquil Waters of the Alleghenies (GC2ZT4), highlighting just an amazing scenic area. And you'll likely see a train, as the Mainline trains run right through this area.
Once you enter the SGL road (Bird Eye Road) from Tunnelhill in Gallitzin, there is an SGL parking area here if you'd like the walk, or you can drive down to the parking waypoint. Be advised that this is a dirt road in fairly good shape most of the year, but in extremely muddy conditions or snow, it may become treacherous. Also be careful if you have a low clearance vehicle, there are some uneven and rocky spots. Once at GZ, be respectful and DO NOT disturb the coke oven area. In the summer/fall, the coke ovens may be harder to see because of all of the summer growth. As this is State Game Lands, be respectful of hunters and wear your orange.
