Le verrou glaciaire
Parmi toutes les traces laissées par les glaciers dans les Vosges, les plus directes et évidentes sont l’érosion glaciaire à l’échelle du relief.
L' érosion glaciaire est due à l'action du glacier sur le relief (souvent une vallée) . Le glacier use les roches sur lesquelles il se déplace, transporte les débris qu'il a arrachés et les déposent sur ses bords ou devant lui.
L'érosion glaciaire a faconné les vallées, leur donnant souvent un profil en long et un profil en travers caractéristique. En long, elles peuvent présenter une succession d’élargissements et de rétrécissements . En travers, elles se présentent sous une forme d’AUGE, avec des flancs abrupts et un fond plat. Les flancs de la vallée possèdent des replats qui prennent le nom d’EPAULEMENT.
La vallée du Valtin est une vallée en forme d’AUGE, les versants sont dissymétriques. Le fond de la vallée est plat. La pente n’excède pas 2% sur toute la longeur. L’église et le vieux bourg bâties sur un éperon rocheux morainique sont à l’emplacement d’un EPAULEMENT.
Actuellement la forme en "auge" de la vallée est fortement atténué par les éboulis et la végétation.
Le verrou glaciaire
Le profil en long de la vallée glaciaire est plus caractéristique que le profil en travers
Le verrou glaciaire du Valtin est une barrière rocheuse. La langue glaciaire en tentant de la surmonter a créé ainsi en amont de ce verrou, une cuvette de surcreusement encore appelée ombilic et une vallée suspendue (petit ombilic au Rundstein, vallée de la Combe )
Au Waypoint indiqué , vous êtes au coeur de ce verrou glaciaire.
Ce verrou qui forme une barrière naturelle a été tranché par les eaux de la Meurthe. Le torrent a ainsi crée une gorge profonde. Ce verrou est en rapport avec un jeu de failles responsable du décalage du traçé de la Meurthe à cet endroit.

Among all the traces left by glaciers in the Vosges, the most direct and obvious are glacial erosion on a relief scale.
Glacial erosion is due to the action of the glacier on the relief (often a valley). The glacier wears away the rocks on which it moves, transports the debris it has torn off and deposits them on its edges or in front of it.
Glacial erosion has shaped the valleys, often giving them a long profile and a characteristic cross profile. In length, they can present a succession of enlargements and narrowing. Crosswise, they are in the form of a trough, with steep sides and a flat bottom. The sides of the valley have flats which take the name of SHOULDER.
The Valtin valley is a valley in the shape of an AUGE, the slopes are asymmetrical. The bottom of the valley is flat. The slope does not exceed 2% over the entire length. The church and the old town built on a moraine rocky outcrop are at the site of a SHOULDER. Currently the "trough" shape of the valley is greatly attenuated by scree and vegetation.
The Ice Lock
The longitudinal profile of the glacial valley is more characteristic than the transverse profile
The Valtin glacial lock is a rock barrier. The glacial tongue trying to overcome it thus created upstream of this lock, a deepening basin still called umbilicus and a hanging valley (small umbilicus in Rundstein, Combe valley) At the indicated Waypoint, you are at the heart of this glacial lock. This lock which forms a natural barrier was cut by the waters of the Meurthe. The torrent thus created a deep gorge. This lock is related to a game of faults responsible for the shifting of the layout of the Meurthe at this location.
