Geocache Description:

Placed on PA's 2014 Trail of the Year, the Redbank Valley Trail. Open dawn to dusk.

For new cachers............. in case you've never heard how geocaching got started. On May 1, 2000 President Clinton decided to make the GPS (Global Positioning System, created by the US Dept. of Defense) available to the general public. That is why we cachers celebrate May 2nd each year as the anniversary of Blue Switch Day - it signifies the day GPS became available to everybody. This year (2020) we reached the 20th anniversary of this. Due to being quarantined because of the Covid 19 coronavirus it was impossible for most people to celebrate this big anniversary on May 2, 2020, although some events are being rescheduled for later in the year to commemorate it.

On May 3, 2000 a guy named Dave Ulmer placed the very first cache (called a stash) out near Portland, Oregon (GCF, The Original Stash --- you can look it up). He just wanted to see if any of his buddies could navigate to it and then one thing lead to another as other people placed stashes and eventually geocaching as we now know it was born. You can google it if you want more details.
