For new cachers............ in geocaching many cachers like to find really old caches. Some do it just for bragging rights, some do it to complete challenge caches where you must show proof before you can log them as found.
Oldest caches can be broken down into Oldest (still active) in the World, or Oldest (still active) in each state, province, region, or country. Different challenge caches require different things or some cachers may just set personal goals to find certain ones.
Some cachers try to find all of the remaining Year 2000 caches that were published the first year that geocaching started (oldest still active in the world). At this time there are still about 110 left (lists vary, but you get the idea) out of the 255 that were originally placed from 5/02/00 until the end of the year.
Some cachers try to find the oldest cache in each state or province, etc. In some states or provinces no caches were published until 2001 so if you are after the oldest in each place they are not necessarily from the year 2000.
