63 of the 150 Pōkai Whenua GeoTour caches will contain a randomly placed special FTF token (a replica of the Tuia Mātauranga GeoTour commemorative coin). This is yours to keep! If you find more than one, you might consider leaving it for the next person who finds the cache.
The word Puhoi translates to "slow water" which when compared with the Māori word pūhoi, means "be slow, sluggish, unhurried" This sums up this village well as the iconic buildings in the town are pretty well unchanged since they were built and a slower pace of life is enjoyed by many. There are many well known places in Puhoi that can be visited and is well known for cheese making, a craft that came with the early settlers.
It was settled by Europeans on 29 June 1863 by a group of German-speaking migrants from Staab in Bohemia, now a province of the Czech Republic, under the leadership of Captain Martin Krippner. They were assisted with the navigation of the Puhoi River by Te Hemara Tauhia ,a rangitira of Ngāti Whātua who was very supportive of the new immigrants to this land.
At the posted coordinates you will find a memorial stone which commemorates the site where two nikau whare were built to house the first group of settlers.
