The historic (1885) Sutton suspension bridge near Middlemarch was destroyed by the flood of July 2017.

The bridge had been restricted to five-tonne vehicles since mid-2015 because of its state of repair and repair work was underway to take the trucks weighing up to 19.5 tonnes was completed a month before the floods. As the local news reported after the failue of the bridge noted scaffolding left under the bridge and if it might have contributed to the bridge being destroyed. The scaffolding could have caught debris floating down the swollen Taieri River.
Unfotunately the damage was extensive and the bridge could not be saved. From this cache location you can see the new bridge where the old bridge was.
Strath Taieri Community Board, the council decided to focus on building the new bridge first, before deciding on what should be done with the old bridge's historic stone columns. Be intresting to see what they do with those.
