Wanneer je via de fietsenstalling de steiger betreedt en naar de uiterste westpunt loopt, is links van de grijze gebouwen de Oude Kerktoren en rechts van de grijze gebouwen de Koepelkerk te zien. Voor de aanleg van het Stationseiland kon je de Amsterdamse binnenstad vanaf het IJ in al zijn pracht aanschouwen: tegenwoordig moet je hiervoor de hoogte in: aan de overzijde van het IJ is dit 's avonds om 21.30 uur kosteloos mogelijk op een zekere locatie en ook de grijze toren opent zo nu en dan zijn deuren voor het dakterras. Buiten deze vogelvluchtperspectieven resten ons slechts de schilderijen uit de 19e eeuw en vroeger. Er waren in deze eeuw plannen om Haringpakkerstoren te herbouwen achter de twee grijze gebouwen, maar daar is het niet van gekomen om de status van Unesco-werelderfgoed van het Singel/de grachtengordel niet in gevaar te brengen.
