Marty Byrde lived in Chicago with his wife Wendy Byrde and their two young children, Charlotte and Jonah.
He worked as a financial adviser with his business partner Bruce, and lived a moderately successful life.
Marty and his business partner Bruce worked for the Mexican Cartel, laundering their money.
Unbeknown to Marty, Bruce stole $8m of the cartel’s money, which led to his execution, along with his girlfriend.
Marty pleaded for his life and offered to repay the $8m by way of an intriguing pitch. He would move to the Ozarks in Missouri and set up a brand-new money laundering hub for the cartel.
The cartel ordered Marty to liquidate his assets into $8m of cash and move to the Ozarks, and wash that money for the cartel by the end of the summer. Failure would result in the execution of his family and himself.
Hot on Marty’s trail was a FBI Agent Roy Petty. He was hell bent on bringing down Marty and the Cartel.
Marty’s troubles soon began from the moment he landed in the Ozarks with $8m in cash, which sat inside two suitcases in a motel room, under a bed.
Local troublemaker Ruth Langmore, working as a cleaner, stumbled across the cash. Having never seen that amount of money she stole a case full, but in her rush, she missed the other half of the cash.
Marty managed to track her down with the rest of her criminal family, the Langmores.
At first they refused to hand it over. Marty eventually told them who the money belonged too and what fate would befall them. Scared for their safety they handed the money back, but kept $50 thousand dollars for themselves.
