The nearby Chautauqua County Fairgrounds were used a Prisoner of War (POW) Camp during World War 2. While many men from Chautauqua County were serving their country abroad, it created a shortage in the workforce at home. The POWs at the camp helped out with food production. At one time, over 400 German POWs were housed at the Fairgrounds in Dunkirk.
A recording of a presentation on the Dunkirk POW camp is available at https://youtu.be/RU-0pI4_Ktc
