Otago Central Rail Trail

The 150km Otago Central Rail Trail, which runs from Clyde to Middlemarch, is New Zealand’s first rail trail, which opened in February 2000 and served as the lodestar for the national network of cycle trails that have since sprouted. Following the path of the old railway lines, it can be accessed year-round by mountain bikers, walkers and horse riders.

The introduction to E Bikes has meant people who are not keen cyclists can get out and enjoy the Rail Trails. When in Middlemarch I got the opportunity to try one out plus all of the latest gadets and apps. With the opportunities of caching in mind I took to the streets of Middlemarch;

I started at the corner of Swansea Street and South Street, heading down South Road and taking what was a smooth left onto Kirk Street then right onto Anerafon Street as the GPS stopped.

It started up again as I reached the corner of Aberafon Street and Kirk Street. I headed down Kirk Street the left onto Nottage Street then right onto West Street. As I got to South Road I realised I should have gone left so I quickly did a U turn until I was back at Anerafon Street.

I think I am getting the hand of this. Now I head west before I head down Kirk Street then left onto Nottage Street then right onto West Street before right again onto South Road. As I reach the corker of Kirk Street and South Road I decided to stop and take a quick selfie.

Carrying on along South Road I took a right up Swansea Street waving to my friends before turning right onto Nottage Street then left on Kirk Street then left again on Aberafon Street. I had to stop at Swansea Street because I realised I had dropped something.

I found my lost item at the corner of Nottage Street and Kirk Street. I decided to ride along Nottage Street to Swansea Street then right then right again onto Aberafon Street then another fast right onto Kirk Street... I wonder how quikly I can ride this to South Road. Opps a little too quick, good think there are strong braked or I might have gone over the fence. Right a quick breather and I'll just walk the bike for a minute.

I get back on the bike on the corner of South Road and West Steet and ride North to Aberafon Steet before I had a go at doing a quick uturn, these bikes are pretty agile. Then I turn right onto Nottage Street then right again onto Kirt Street where I run into one of my firends on their bike at Aberafon Street.

After a quick stop and chat we decided to see how fast these are so we agree to race down Kirk Street then left, and left again back up West Street before a final left untl we reached this same spot.

Wow pretty cool, now to test the cornering we start riding towards Swansea Street then turn left then left again onto Nottage Street then right and right again onto South Road and then right again before we stop and meet up with the others at the corner of Swansea Street and Nottage Street.

A bit later on when we are at the corner of Aberafon Street and West Street I am given the opportunity to try out one of the other brands so I swtich bikes and try it out by riding along Aberafon Street then left down Kirk Street, then left to Nottage Steet before I did a uturn at the junction with West Street before taking a left and another left stopping on the corner of South Road and West Street. If only the town planners had it as East Street imagine all the fun we could have had.

Looking up West Street I couldn't see my friends so I quickly race up the road to Aberafon Street. i stopped and looked around for them.

Catching up with one of my friends at the corner of Aberafon Street and Kirk Street I am told our friends are going clockwise to catch up with me, so we decide to ride back along Aberafon Street then right onto Wes Street and back down to corner of South Road.

Now that we are all together we decide the roads are quiet enough for a couple of rounds of races. The first race is all four bikes and we head up West Street, left onto Aberafon Street then left onto Kirk Street then left on South Road back to the corner with West Street. Hmm postioned three, I am sure I can do better.

Now with the slowest rider out of the race and we can off load the extra weight of our bags now it is time to see who would win doing the same race.Up West Street, left onto Aberafon Street then left onto Kirk Street, opps lost my foot on the pedal, then left on South Road back to the corner with West Street. Hmm still third but closer.

Now to shake it up the fourth member of our team says we need to go up West Street but go left onto Nottage Street then right onto Kirk Street then right on Aberafon Street then right onto West Street then right on Nottage Steet then left onto Kirk Street before a final left back to them..... how am I going to remember all of this? Well one of my competetors took a wrong turning so I placed second.

So now its the two E Bikes I have ridden today which are in the final. We agree that we will finish off with three identical laps but this time we will go from the corner of South Road then right up Kirk Street then right at Aberafon Street then down West Street, so we get a good final straight.

How we didn't crash the bikes at the finish point I don't know but it was so close we agreed to call it a tie.

Well that was good fun, now I think I am ready to start on the rail trail. Hopefully you are too.
