On May 17, 1770, Lieutenant James Cook sailed north on his epic journey along Australia’s east coast. His journal entry for the day was as follows ‘these hills lie but a little way inland, and not from each other: they are remarkable for the singular form of their elevation, which very much resembles a glasshouse, and for this reason, I called them Glass Houses’. Additionally, the Glass House Mountains area was a special meeting place where many First Nations Peoples gathered for ceremonies and trading. This place is considered spiritually significant with many ceremonial sites still present and protected today. Finally, the diverse terrain of these beautiful peaks make them particularly important for biodiversity, providing habitat to many flora and fauna of conservational significance.
