Didja know that the San Antonio River has a dam and lock about a mile north of the downtown area? When the River Walk was expanded to include the Museum Reach district, it became necessary to solve the problem of the nine foot difference in river levels from Brackenridge Park to downtown. Some wanted to just have a dam, use two fleets of barges with steps in between to traverse the distance. However, former mayor and co-chair of the San Antonio River Oversight Committee, Lila Cockerel summoned both the mayor and county judge to a meeting. There she sat them both down and said, in no uncertain terms, “Boys, you will not take my lock & dam out of this project!” Through her efforts and a generous donation from AT&T the project was completed and the Museum Reach portion was opened in 2009.
