Die Gemeinde Markthof war über Jahrhunderte von Hochwasser betroffen welches von der Donau und der March ausgegangen ist. Dabei wurde immer die gesamte Ernte vernichtet und einige Gebäude beschädigt. Das Kochwasser im August 1897 erreichte die größte Ausdehnung des Jahrhunderts. Durch die Hochwasserregulierung in Wien, wurden Hochwasser in diesem Gebiet immer häufiger und intensiver. Einige Bauern wollten absiedeln und baten um eine Unterstützung beim Kaiser. Bei einer Audienz beschloss der Kaiser, dass die Bauern keine Unterstützung zum Absiedeln erhalten werden, sondern der geplante Dammausbau, welcher nur bis Witzelsdorf geplant war, bis hierher verlängert wurde. An dieses Ereignis erinnert heute noch die Florianikapelle, welche in Anwesenheit von Kaiser Franz Josef I. eingeweiht wurde. Am 10. Juni 1905 wurde die Florianikapelle in Anwesendheit des Kaisers Franz Josef I., des Wiener Bürgermeisters Dr. Karl Lueger und vielen anderen Festgäste von Weihbischof Dr. Marschal eingeweiht.

The municipality of Markthof suffered for centuries from Danube and March/Morava floods until the Marchfeld dyke was finished in 1905. To commemorate this special occasion the Chapel of St Florian has been built and it was consecrated in the presence of the Emperor Franz Josef I. In the late 19th century Markthof suffered heavy floods every year and they often damaged the whole harvest as well as buildings in the village. The flood in August 1897 was the most devastating one. The bishop Dr. Marschal consecrated the Chapel of St Florian on 10 June 1905 in the presence of the Emperor Franz Josef I, the Viennese mayor Dr. Karl Lueger and many other guests of honor. The Chapel has been built to commemorate the completion of the Marchfeld flood dyke which stretches from Vienna to the River March/Morava. It took 23 years (1882 - 1905) to construct the dyke which now protects 35 Marchfeld municipalities from floods. For the local people this was the most spectacular event in their lives.
