Green Lantern made his first appearance in the All-American Comics issue #16 in 1940, however the characters and back story behind the Green Lantern superhero are complicated since they have been changed and have evolved many times through the years. There is also a Green Lantern Corps that comprises multiple members.
Basically, Green Lantern gets his powers from the Green Lantern power ring, which was a power ring created by the Guardians of the Universe - it gives the Green Lantern the ability to fly, teleport, read minds, walk through walls, turn invisible, generate plasma bolts, and create force fields.
Green Lantern's arch enemy is Sinestro, who is a former member of the Green Lantern Corps. Sinestro was dishonorably discharged for abusing his powers. Star Sapphire was Green Lantern's girlfriend before she became one of his most deadly enemies also.
